POW/MIA stands for Prisoner of War/Missing in Action, referring to service members who were captured or went missing during military conflicts. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) works to locate and identify missing personnel, ensuring they are accounted for and honored. The U.S. Department of Defense also observes National POW/MIA Recognition Day, September 19, 2025, to honor those who never returned.
